Issue: Financial pressures threatened the promised roll out of bowel cancer screening in England.
Activity: Bowel Cancer UK rallied political and media support for the roll out of screening and, once this was secured, undertook a detailed audit of its progress.
Result: The campaign successfully reactivated the roll-out of screening following funding difficulties and ultimately secured a high-profile commitment from the Prime Minister to increase the age range for the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme in England. The commitments secured mean that millions of people will benefit from screening in the future. For our work on screening, Mandate was given the Communiqué Best Health Policy Campaign Award in 2008.
"Through an innovative programme of marrying new information on delivery of bowel cancer screening with activity to bring its benefits to life for policymakers, we have kept the issue in the political spotlight. What is more, we have managed to secure significant new commitments from the Government on screening, ensuring that many more people will benefit from it."
