Saving a hospital

Issue: The Royal Surrey County Hospital was threatened with closure as a result of plans to reconfigure health services in Guildford.

Activity: Using a full range of communications tactics – from all-night vigils in Parliament Square involving David Cameron to organising a display of children’s support for the hospital – the Campaign has developed a groundswell of support at every level for the Royal Surrey, establishing it as the pre-eminent example in a wider national debate about hospitals under threat.

Result: The local PCT abandoned any notion of closing the hospital completely. For our work on the Save the Royal Surrey Campaign, Mandate was given the Communiqué Best Health Policy Campaign Award in 2007.

"The team at Mandate Communications were an integral part of our Campaign to save the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford. Their advice and practical support on media and lobbying issues throughout the campaign was critical to our success. I strongly recommend that any hospital facing the threat of downgrading or closure considers working with Mandate Communications."
