Putting clinical nurse specialists on the map

Collecting accurate data on the provision of Clinical Nurse Specialists transformed the debate on the issue.  As a result of the clear and indisputable evidence of inequalities in provision, the Government has been forced to take action to protect and grow the specialist nursing workforce, focusing attention on tumours such as prostate cancer which had previously not received the priority they deserved.

Frank Chinegwundoh, Prostate Cancer Charter for Action

Issue: Specialist nurse positions were under threat and there were significant disparities in provision.

Activity: Mandate advised the Prostate Cancer Charter for Action on auditing the provision of clinical nurse specialists. By collecting accurate data on the inequalities that exist in the provision of Clinical Nurse Specialists, we stimulated a thoughtful debate on the role that nurses play and the action that needs to be taken to ensure adequate provision.

Result: The result was an explicit recognition by the Government of the problem, as well as action to address it, laying the ground for real improvements in support for men affected by prostate cancer. For our work on clinical nurse specialists, Mandate was given the Communiqué Best Use of Data Award in 2008.
