Alex Finnegan

Case study: Alex

I joined Mandate on the graduate fast track scheme in September 2008, specialising in both public affairs and public relations. I really enjoy the cut and thrust of political debate and working with the media so a career in communications seemed like a natural choice.

It was the range of clients and the calibre of people I met at Mandate which first attracted me to the company. From day one I have worked with a variety of different clients helping them navigate the corridors of power or managing their corporate reputations. It's really satisfying when we help a client get their issue on the political agenda or noticed by the right media.

Some of my busiest periods are on the day of the Budget or Queen's Speech when we will be expected to provide clients with instant advice on what the Government's announcements mean for them. It often involves getting to grips with difficult issues and complex policy areas, crafting the right messages and working out what it means for our clients. I love the thrill and excitement of days like this.

Working across our corporate affairs practice, I also get to see how the worlds of politics and the media interact. I still get a kick out of seeing a story, which I have placed, published in one of the nationals, regional or trade press.

Working alongside former journalists, government advisers and PR gurus there is a great opportunity at Mandate to learn from the best in the business.
