Posted by Theo Blackwell at Wed, 21/01/2009 - 12:32pm in
Mandate was on hand to witness last night's extraordinary speech by Bank of England Governor Mervyn King to the East Midlands CBI in Nottingham.
While the eyes of the world were firmly fixed on the inauguration of Barack Obama, America's first African-American President, economic history was being quietly made on Beeston, Nottinghamshire, with the announcement of a range of "unconventional measures" to keep the economy afloat and an astonishing attack on the banks.

Let the Games begin...

Olympic fever swept the Mandate offices this lunch time with the explosive start to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The Games burst into life with a breathtaking display of fireworks, music (er, anyone else confused by the choice of bagpipes) and dancing.
In the lead up to the Games the Chinese made clear their intent to host the "best ever" Games and today's opening certainly lived up to hype. The Chinese sure know how to throw a party - today's festivities were complete with a military band, dancing puppets, a 16 tonne globe and 20,000 fireworks.

There has been a bit of ribbing in the Mandate offices recently of those of us approaching the big 3-0. It's been made worse by the fact that some of us have discovered the wonders of the Boden catalogue - the last fashion refuge for the not-quite-young-anymore urban professional.
I was quite partial to a nice linen shirt, but now I've been stopped in my tracks and may never shop at Boden again. Why?

"...indeed let us be frank about it – most of our people have never had it so good."
Last night some of the Mandate team headed down to the National Theatre on London's South Bank to see the Howard Brenton play Never So Good , an engaging political drama about the life and times of British Prime Minister, Harold Macm

To Downing Street last night for the Sheila McKechnie Foundation awards, presented by Gordon Brown. The Foundation, formed a few years ago in memory of the former head of Which and the Consumers Association, does a great job supporting up and coming campaigners through training, mentoring and networking.
Mandate has worked with the Foundation on a pro bono basis for the last few years to help train the award winners in lobbying, PR and influencing skills. To be honest though, the passion and determination of the winners is something that you can't teach and can be quite humbling. We'll be working with the latest batch of winners later in the year - something the team here are genuinely looking forward to.
Andrew Lansley MP speaks at Mandate business breakfast

Mandate business breakfasts have always attracted a big following. In the past we have heard from people as diverse as Business Minister Shriti Vadera, Kate Barker during review of land use planning for the Treasury, Cancer Tsar Mike Richards, Lord Coe during the bid for the 2012 Olympics and Conservative blogger Iain Dale.
It's perhaps a sign of how far the Conservatives have travelled that this morning a pac
