Graduates Case Study: Malcolm

I joined Mandate on the graduate fast track scheme in January 2007 after completing an internship with the company.
One of the great strengths of the fast track scheme is the variety of work that you are exposed to from day one. The clients I work for are interested in issues as diverse as sexual health screening and flood surveying, and the nature of the work is varied too. While for some clients I spend most of my time conducting research and writing, for others I will be phoning journalists and MPs offices, arranging meetings or helping to organise major events and receptions.

The daily life of a graduate fast tracker at Mandate can sometimes be hard to predict. An unexpected comment to the media, policy announcement from government, or a live remark to a commentator can lead to action stations, and completely change your day. As this has to be balanced with essential daily tasks, one of the first things any graduate fast tracker will become an expert at is time management!

The support you will receive on the graduate fast track is second to none. Regular training sessions on issues such as presentation skills help with your personal development, while informal sessions with external speakers provide invaluable help in getting to grips with some of the broader dynamics of the media and political world. The wealth of knowledge within the company is another great strength; having consultants with expertise in legislation, broadcasting, press, the European Union, charity campaigning and more, means that there is always an 'expert' on hand to talk you through any unfamiliar issues.

The really satisfying part of the job comes through achieving real benefits for clients. The job can sometimes be intense and fast paced, and is definitely not for those who like a quiet life. But for those with a real interest in both the political and corporate worlds, with a desire for a challenge, Mandate provides a great environment to work, and an opportunity to build a great career.
